Celebrate the Artist

The Michael V. Gmitter Memorial Art EXHIBITION and Scholarship

MICHAEL V. GMITTER, a 22-year-old Edinboro art student studying metals and jewelry at Edinboro University, died in 2006. The following year, Michael’s parents established an endowment to support an annual Celebrate the Artist memorial exhibition, competition and scholarship in their son’s name. Since it’s inception in 2007, Celebrate the Artist has been chaired by Professor Cappy Counard and has benefited thousands of art students who have visited the exhibitions and seen the work of their classmates. In addition, the process of applying and exhibiting has benefited over one hundred Gmitter student finalists and, over $20,000 in cash has been awarded. Edinboro’s senior art students submit their applications to become a Gmitter finalist with the opportunity install their artwork in a mini-solo show in the university’s Bruce Gallery in Doucette Hall. Each student is given just eight hours to complete their professional displays during the Spring semester. At the opening reception, a crowd gathers to witness the awarding several thousand dollars in cash prizes. In 2021, the show was in the gallery from April 26 to May 3, but, the crowd was on line.
